Christa Taylor: Modest?

The last straw: The Evangelical Outpost featured Christa Taylor as a “modish designer” of modest clothing. I’ll let you click over to the designer’s site. Return and give your opinion!

Are her clothing designs and selections….

1.) Cool and Modest

2.) Somewhat Modest….for a teenager

3.) Not at all modest….wouldn’t be caught dead in it.

All I can say is….White Linen Bermuda Shorts. Yep. Screams Modesty to me.

I have been to this website in the past and each time I am just like “ummm…why did I come here again?” The world’s version of modesty and the Christian version of modesty are two different things I will say that much.
No, I would not wear any of the clothing. There was one, maybe 2 skirts that seem alright…but the rest is a fashion no no, along with those tops and umm…there is nothing modest about the dresses or swim wear.

If someone wants to be modest, go all the way. Don’t do the half way thing with most of your legs and upper arms and breasts showing. Either you’re modest or you’re not.

Even if I wasn’t a Christian, I probably wouldn’t wear any of that clothing..it just does not look appealing…LOL.

    Bless U!

I thought these clothes were cute. With the exception of the skirt that looked like it was a movie theater curtain, the skirts were below the knee, the tops didn’t reveal any clevage. I thought the clothes were cute and I’d let my teenage daugthers wear them. For those of you who don’t think they are modest can you say why? I guess I’m used to the CA dress: tank tops, low cut tops, short skirts, and this is what some of my fellow sisters wear to church. I think this designer is making modest things. What do you ladies wear and what is modest to you? I don’t own a pair of pants, I only wear skirts that I make and I do buy t shirts to go with the tops. My shirts are not low cut and have short or 3/4 length sleeves. My teens still wear jeans but I insist they wear dresses/skirts to church. I would like to know what is immodest about this designer?

I forgot to add, I went to work today without make up. I’m taking baby steps!!

I thought everything was extremely modest. Nothing inappropriate was revealed. Still wouldn’t be caught dead in the swimsuit, though, not immodest but very unattractive. I was raised in the “skirt-only, no makeup, long hair, no jewelry, sleeves to the elbows” tradition and do not want my children raised like that. However, I’m careful about what they DO wear, having three daughters, and were any of them old enough, would not hesitate to let them wear this collection.

Cute. Modest. Feminine. (Except for that swimsuit… Wow.)

I think those fashions appeal to teens but that bubble skirt was a bit much and that theater curtain thing? Ewwwww! I’m thinking not modest at all.

I realize this post is old, but it came across my path and I thought I’d say hello.

theatre curtain…that is funny. lol. I’ve never thought of that, it kinda does- doesn’t it? Well, I’m proud to wear my “theatre curtain”, I get compliments on it frequently, even from fashion magazine editors.

I would love to chat with any of you gals further, but time is short and the to-do list long…if there is anything you gals would like to comment on- run to my blog. I would love to hear from you. Good and bad. ; )

    -Cheers,
    Christa Taylor

While the clothing does seem modest compared to some (okay, most) of today’s adolescent gear, by no means does it meet my standards of not only Christian modesty but Plain-ness.

I might be okay with someone else’s child wearing that, but the clothing is just a few drops too mainstream for my taste.

Wow- Can i just say you people are tripping? The clothes are cute, and I would say they go far beyond the bounds of modesty. As a Believer, I think it would be much better for us to worry about the spiritual state of the world, than to only show up and be loud mouthed and critical about the state of the worlds hemlines. Show people the same love and understanding that Christ showed and let Him deal with the miniskirts.

I thought your guys’ comments were a little too harsh. Especially the first comment mentioned on this site about the white linen bermuda shorts. So maybe one mistake was made…big deal. We’re all sinners, aren’t we? I’m sure none of you have made one mistake in your life. (hint hint.) Besides, the Bible says “come out from among them and be ye separate.” I don’t see anyone else’s comments on this website to be of any spiritual significance in God’s eyes. I’m sorry if this offends you, but at least this girl is making a difference in the way women dress nowadays (CHRISTIAN WOMEN, I MIGHT ADD!) I’ve gotta wonder sometimes when I go out on the street and see different women who walk past me- are they Christians or not? Hard to tell with so many miniskirts, tube tops, cut-out t-shirts, and short shorts walking around. Christ called us to be different. If you want to wear low-cut tops and shorty-short shorts, and bikinis, as a Christian, an ambassador for Jesus Christ, ask yourself this question: “what are my motives for dressing this way?” An interesting thought to leave with you. A great book you might want to read about living “set-apart,” is “Authentic Beauty,” by Leslie Ludy, the wife of a couple who is very well-known in Christian circles today. (And she is not a FRUMP by any means!) And also, that swimsuit on christa’s website was very “jackie kennedy onassis.” Classy, MODEST, vintage, and CLASSIC. I’ve gotta wonder about people’s sense of style- if they want timeless elegance and they LOVE Audrey Hepburn’s style (supposedly), and they can’t appreciate this swimsuit or any of the other clothes on this website, I’ve gotta wonder whether they even know what Audrey hepburn’s style was like. (It was like those clothes you saw on the christa taylor website!!!!) Just some thoughts to consider. Those who judge harshly another Christian’s efforts to please the Lord in what they do, need to examine their own hearts, as to whether they are truly “set apart” for Jesus Christ.

I think most of it is pretty modest. The skirts and shorts are below the knees (for the most part), but personally, I believe in sleeves (some of the shirts are sleeveless). I think I would wear some of the skirts, but honestly, an experienced shopper could find most of those clothes in a department store. And no, the swimsuit is neither modest nor feminine.

I am a fan of Christa-Taylor. Every store/line has things geared for different people. I would love to see everything in your closet and what credits you have to cast judgment. It would be impossible to make everyone happy, every company just has to do their best. And it is between them and God. Thank goodness!

I vote for choice #1: cool and modest!!! I guess if one’s definition of modest is limited to long skirts and shirts with sleeves then Christa-Taylor’s clothing line would not be modest.
Anna, I think your review of this company’s offerings is rather harsh and I obviously disagree with it:)

Quotes

"I can't say I don't believe in your God, but I don't believe He meant the world to be as it is." ~Nicholas Higgins. North and South.

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." No idea where that last quote came from, but I like it!
