If a woman wears a dress but does not respect and obey her husband, she is not modest no matter how many layers she is wearing. Modesty does not stop in dress.

Veiled Glory 
One of the things that really caught my attention about now now-husband was the fact that he dressed like a grownup: slacks, leather shoes, a collared shirt. He wasn’t going about all of the time in the same clothes that he wore back in highschool. You know the everyday look of so many men these days: jeans, t-shirt, white sports socks, sneakers… often a baseball cap.
I’m not saying that the jeans-and-t-shirt thing is “wrong” but there is deffinately a noticeable difference between a man that dresses like a boy and a man that dresses like a man.
I was JUST thinking today about, “Why didn’t I dress with a bit more class while in high school and college?” I mean, *when* did jeans and t-shirts and sneakers become everyday wear for both genders, especially in public, while at school?
And would a school uniform have helped me to dress more classy while out in public? Some of my family and some friends have visited me over here and they noticed straight away that the Brits dress really nicely when out and about in public. There’a huge difference over here!
In my travels, I have noticed that most of the rest of the world dress more nicely than we do. Even the street-sweeping ladies in China look better than most white-collar women here!
I’m not sure if you listen much to secular music, but I think it’s interesting that men’s modesty is being addressed in the hip-hop/rap genre with that song by Gen. Larry Platt called “Pants On The Ground” where he tells young men to pull their pants up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZGVC2TdFO0
Whenever I see a young man walking around with those awful “sagged” pants, I have to bite my tongue from singing that song.
We’ve been drifting toward conservative modest dress for several
years in conjunction with nurturing voluntary simplicity in our lives. The modest dress has been a push back against what surrounds us in the world we live in.
Researching for voluntary simplicity took us to the Amish, and
it was striking how sharp both the men and women looked even when
wearing their grubbies out working in the fields.
My wife started covering and I moved toward what has been called
sears plain. Then while discussing my wife’s then hanging veil a
coworker asked me what I had done to stand apart from the world.
After giving this some thought we jointly decided that suspenders
with black pants and muted color shirts were enough. Since that move two years ago we have begun attending a conservative Mennonite church. She is wearing the traditional cape dress and white mesh prayer cap and I have started buttoning the shirts to the throat with suspenders, Beachy Amish style.
The beauty of this wardrobe is it’s simplicity. Mulling over
what to wear amounts to blue gray or white shirt for me. With
a white shirt, the black jeans and suspenders are suddenly down
right formal compared to the uniform tee shirt and blue jeans
worn by other men my age. The white shirt has actually drawn
comments from others in the hallways at work. Yet a quick change
to a denim shirt after work and I am ready for anything the barn yard can throw at me.
As for her, when all you wear is cape dresses it just comes down
to color and how new. It never ceases to amaze me how well she
is treated in public. While a teen age girl may smirk her little
brother will be holding the door open (true story). The testimony
of plain dress is a powerful and bold statement which is sorely
needed at this time in America.
My husband and I were recently out and talked about how poorly many men looked. The usual attire was shirt tail out, shorts (even in elders) and clothing too large. Not to mention, many of the men looked as if they needed maternity shirts. The fashion accessory to these men was usually a woman in shorts, capris or short-shorts with a sleeveless top.
Think about the 1800’s: it was hot then too in summer. But, I doubt the men wore short pants and probably not short sleeved shirts. If you think about how briefly many folk are even out in the heat and back to the AC, skimpy clothing is just silly.
I wonder if these men are just trying to maintain some illusion of being young and hip. It seems we rush children through childhood then, dawdle from 20 on up,never reaching maturity and adulthood.
