Gardening to live

Quote taken from newspaper article about shi-shi community gardens in our town:
“In our home country, if we didn’t keep a garden, we would starve.”

a 17 year old Burundi young man tending his family’s 300 square foot plot. They were resettled in our city three years ago.

Makes you rethink your cutsey tomato pots?

hey, even shi-shi gardening is a lot more than most Westerners do. If sissified gardening keeps even a fraction of the community knowledge alive that’s needed for full-bore subsistence agriculture, I’m aaaaall for it.

Quotes

"I can't say I don't believe in your God, but I don't believe He meant the world to be as it is." ~Nicholas Higgins. North and South.

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." No idea where that last quote came from, but I like it!
