Housing Crunch

…of a different variety!

I spoke with a fellow staff member at our University this morning. She is the chief shepherdess of the foreign students. This lady does everything for those kids! Housing, work permits, bank accounts, household supplies, texting them to warn of a hail storm, etc. E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Whatever the University pays her, it should be doubled.

Anyhow, she was telling me that campus housing is full for next semester. The rentals within walking distance are also very difficult to find. Certain groups of students are packing in 6 per one bedroom apartment! Ya know…if somebody had a spare 40 K, they could fix up one of those little crackerbox houses down the street and make plenty in rental money. International students rarely misbehave, because they want to stay here and get their degree.

I could definitely see the potential for those otherwise slummy districts nearby….

As long as they’re really fixed up. The person doing it needs to seriously ask themselves: would I live here? for a long period of time? I live in that kind of housing because I can’t afford anything better, and while it is shelter, those kinds of houses that have been split up to rent out aren’t very good or safe places to live.

While we sure do need affordable housing, it needs to be well-done and well-maintained affordable housing.

"I can't say I don't believe in your God, but I don't believe He meant the world to be as it is." ~Nicholas Higgins. North and South.

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." No idea where that last quote came from, but I like it!
