When was the last time you read this?

Spent about 20 minutes reading aloud (and thinking about) the Declaration of Independence this morning. You can really gain the magnitude of the words if you read it aloud. Maybe folks should be reading it in public patriotic celebrations like Memorial day or July 4th. I haven’t heard it at all. I memorized the most well-known passage, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” in the 5th grade. [Mrs. Ross was the best public school teacher I ever had!]

I encourage you to sit down and read it (with a dictionary close by). I found a nice printer-friendly version at this web site.

Here’s a interesting performance of the Declaration of Independence.

If we still lived in my hometown (DH is military, so we move, often) I think I’d have to be pestering someone about reading it on our 4th celebration. As you might guess from my email address, it’s a big deal (in a town called Wenonah. NJ, to be specific. There’s a Winona, MN as well.)
But for whatever reason they don’t read the Declaration, and ought to. The one time I did hear it read in public was, fittingly enough, at the Philadelphia celebration. Several actors read it from the Art Museum steps, but of course being way back on the PArkway I only heard it from the public address!

interesting you mention this, We just read the constitution, bill of rights, and amendments, and declaration of independence, all in one setting doesnt take that long to do. More people should do it. I was going to read the Federalist Papers too, but got distracted.

"I can't say I don't believe in your God, but I don't believe He meant the world to be as it is." ~Nicholas Higgins. North and South.

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." No idea where that last quote came from, but I like it!
