Take Your Folic Acid Daily!

So I feel justified in taking an extra daily Folic Acid supplement in addition to my multi-tablet and calcium after reading this report. Let’s see, I’ve been taking it consistently for at least 8 months now, having gone through a bottle and a half. Folic Acid is cheap, about $5 for a 7 month supply. Just imagine all the pain and heartache of prematurity and birth defects might be prevented. All women of baby-bearing capabilities should be taking it!

Comments getting spammed

Just took a gander at my Spam box and noticed a couple of legit comments got dumped there! Ooops! WordPress is usually great at figuring out who is whom, but not always. If you have left a sincere comment in the past and it didn’t get posted that is why. I will be conscientious in the future to look over my Spam box and fish out your valuable comments.

Republican County Caucus was Fun!

We attended our first county Republican caucus last night and we had a blast! At first, we had a deer-in-the-head-light look until we were paired up with the most involved couple in the county who just happen to live in our precinct. Wow, that was providential! So now Jeff is our Precinct Chairman and I am the Youth Coordinator. All we had to do was just sign our names on a bunch of paperwork and that is it!

There were several speakers (wouldn’t be politics without speeches); all of our state reps showed up. That was impressive enough to a ‘little person’ like me. We got to shake hands with lots of influential folks in local powers-that-be. One thing that struck me was the age demographic: we were the next to youngest people there. About 80% of the delegates are grey-hairs. I guess that makes sense because of the time/energy commitment necessary to attend the County/District/State conventions younger folks just don’t seem to have.

The best part of the evening (for me) was when each speaker would get up and comment on how large of a turn-out it was. The room was packed! You want to know why? There were 15 people there who were Ron Paul Supporters! That was about 25% of the total headcount. We (with the exception of one) did not wear any buttons or stuff but we did cast knowing looks and nods across the room. I bet this scene will be replayed across our state and nation, time and again. :)

We are committed to attending the District Convention and also the State Convention. Friends of ours will run for the National Delegates and we’ll vote for them to go to Minneapolis! If you haven’t participated in a local Caucus, DO IT! You only have something to gain from the experience.

Another Video on Modesty

Making videos is fun! This installment is also free-form (lots of Umms…sorry!) and discusses my standards of modesty.

Modest Christian Women Unite!

This post is stupendous! Another WordPress Anna rocks it out for modesty:

We talk about modesty a lot in the church, don’t we? And yet we as Christian women are often reluctant to commit to it. There seem to be so few clothing options. Or it seems to be confining and subservient. Or it’s too much trouble to think about specific standards for ourselves. The list of excuses/cop-outs could go on and on. And the list of reasons for modesty could go on and on, too. But I want to give you one that we don’t often think about: we should be modest to serve the witness and testimony of the church around the world

Well, for one, I wish I heard more about it in church. Maybe she does, which is a good thing. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make her drink….but you can salt her oats. ;) There is something (Someone) greater than our minor fashion concerns. It is all about priorities.

Headcovering Video…maybe the first?

This is the first Youtube video, that I know of, on Christian Head covering. Less helium-balloon sounding today. Free form thought. Enjoy!

To My Muslim Sisters

Today is video day…I’m waiting for my next original Audio Blog to process and I will post that one next. First, enjoy this really cool rap video from a Muslim perspective. “Don’t assume these sisters are repressed because they choose to be fully-dressed.”

Nourishing Traditions Question

Here is a question for all those NT ladies out there:

I made some sauerkraut last week and followed the directions to the letter. It seemed pretty easy. Now the stuff has been in the fridge for a week and it doesn’t look edible. There are black spots everywhere! To me, that looks like spoiled, not fermented. What could have gone wrong?? Did I not use enough salt? Too much air? Not enough air?

Profanity - What it Really Means

When Jeff comes home from work, he often expresses frustration over his classmates’ profuse use of profanity. Many of them are former military (not that that should be an excuse) who are used to colorful locution, so much so, that the teacher has to tell them to “be on best behavior” when the class is out on a public service project. The language is a burden for someone who does not wish to slip into that style of speech.

Apparently, in many Emergent church circles, it is cool to be “free” to swear like everyone else. That article is a satire, but here is an instance of someone who is proud of their, uhhh, chosen freedom. [Warning: yes, profanity is used the the articles and comments.]

Am I prude? Bring it on! Because, what I am about to share with you will surprise and possibly shock you out of that dirty mouth of yours.

From the Merriam Webster Dictionary:

Main Entry:
2profane
Function:
adjective
Etymology:
Middle English prophane, from Middle French, from Latin profanus, from pro- before + fanum temple — more at pro-, feast
Date:
15th century
1: not concerned with religion or religious purposes : secular2: not holy because unconsecrated, impure, or defiled : unsanctified3 a: serving to debase or defile what is holy : irreverent b: obscene vulgar4 a: not being among the initiated b: not possessing esoteric or expert knowledge

Or Verb:

1 : to treat (something sacred) with abuse, irreverence, or contempt : desecrate 2 : to debase by a wrong, unworthy, or vulgar use
Or Webster, 1828 Version:
PROFA’NE, a. [L. profanus; pro and fanum, a temple.]

1. Irreverent to any thing sacred; applied to persons. A man is profane when he takes the name of God in vain, or treats sacred things with abuse and irreverence.
2. Irreverent; proceeding from a contempt of sacred things, or implying it; as profane words or language; profane swearing.
3. Not sacred; secular; relating to secular things; as profane history.
4. Polluted; not pure.
Nothing is profane that serveth to holy things.
5. Not purified or holy; allowed for common use; as a profane place. Ezek.42. and 48.
6. Obscene; heathenish; tending to bring reproach on religion; as profane fables. 1 Tim.4.Profane is used chiefly in Scripture in opposition to holy, or qualified ceremonially for sacred services.

PROFA’NE, v.t. To violate any thing sacred, or treat it with abuse, irreverence, obloquy or contempt; as, to profane the name of God; to profane the sabbath; to profane the Scriptures or the ordinances of God.

1. To pollute; to defile; to apply to temporal uses; to use as base or common. Ezek.24.
2. To violate. Mal.2.
3. To pollute; to debase.Lev.21.
4. To put to a wrong use.

So…Words have meanings; they are not toys to amuse you. If you have faith in the Bible as the communicated Word of God (or faith in the Incarnation), Words Mean Things.

If you can claim anything as holy, you must, therefore, claim at least one thing as profane. To believe in the profane is to believe in the possibility of God. Fracture this delicate connection,  you receive relativism and no hope of Hope.

God certainly thought Words Mean Things. He gave a commandment about the verbal mis-use of His Name. Jesus backed this up with telling us that even calling our brother a fool was a [rightly used] damnable offense. Of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

The real source of profanity is from the human heart. Get the source pure and the stream will flow bright and clear. Let it be defiant, and you will love all sorts of profane things.
