Girls will be Girls?

When I bring a lunch to work, I like to peruse some newsy magazines while eating. As I was picking out a magazine off the rack, the cover of the July 30th edition of the New Yorker caught my eye. The female artist entitled it, “Girls will be Girls.”

If I had fur, it would be bristling right now! You know the saying, often used to excuse bad behavior (or even illegal or immoral), “Boys will be Boys”? Do you think the artist is implying that women can be excused for wearing skimmpy clothing as simply something to be winked at? Or how about juxtaposing the girl in the middle with the opposite extreme of a woman wearing a niqaab (face veil) and a fully-habited nun. Girls wearing lots of clothing is also something to be sighed and shrugged off?

Oh, yeah, this is just art. I should relax and not think about it too much because the artist isn’t here to make her statement. I might misinterpret the painting.

The Perennial Question: Pants

Several people have contacted me in regards to the Pants Question. Should women wear pants? What about cultural and historical differences? They are sincerely weighing the issue of pants, modesty and cultural identification so I would like to offer what I can on the subject.

Cara Michele sent me this link on an article regarding pants and Christian women. Dawn Marie helpfully pointed out that this author comes from a United Pentecostal Church background, who have traditionally maintained a skirts-only requirement for their female members. While the author does an extensive and accurate study into the Greek/Hebrew from key verses, I found that his argumentation may be rooted in trying to undo the more unpleasant aspects of his background. “Tossing Baby with Bathwater” might be a good euphemism to describe the entire article.

He makes a very convincing argument in regards to Deuteronomy verse (22:5) which most skirts-only folks use to justify their position. The context, according to the Hebrew lexicon, is for women to not wear militaristic garb or armor that were singularly male and for men to not wear what was singularly women’s clothing. I wasn’t too clear on what clothing or items was particularly female but I suppose that was clear to the Israelites. Fair enough, I can handle that interpretation.

The author warns against:

It is important that we do not have a knee-jerk reaction to every change in fashion. Clearly, some are indicative of moral decline, but many are not. As with everything, changes in fashion must be weighed against biblical truths to make the determination.

At the same time he thinks there only needs to be a “stylistic” difference between men’s and women’s clothing, with pants being acceptable as long as they look somehow appropriate to each sex. The glaring overlook in the entire article is the issue of Modesty. Yes, those hip-hugger, embroidered jeans may be considered feminine in comparison to loose carpenter pants of men, but they hardly convey sobriety and shame-facedness!

Ok, let’s get down to brass tacks. Do I wear pants? Yes, but not often and under particular circumstances. How do I decide if pants are modest or not? My undergirding principle is to not show my rear or undergarments. When I wear my favorite pair of pants, a loose linen/cotton blend pair, I match it with long button-down blouses that cover that central area. No pantyline woes!

If I go hiking, I wear a set of denim overalls for safety and durability. My husband, the wildlife, and stray hikers are the only others who see me in those. Again, no underwear showing and minimal rear-fitting. I would put my pants wearing at about 10% of my daily wear, with skirts and dresses in the remainder.

Does this mean that I give wholesale approbation to pants-wearing amongst the Christian female populace? Nope. I say this because the pants and the style in which they are worn are not modest. If you have the time, try cruising around some of the cultural boutiques of Modest Clothes. When you generally see pants in these shops, they are paired with long shirts, vests, dusters, or jackets. My favorite are Salwar Kameezes. [Spelling is fluid on that one!] Indian women wear loose cotton or silk paints with a long tunic over top, embroidered and well-sequined!

My second argument with dresses/skirts being more modest than pants is also culturally-based. Most of my readers, I’m guessing, are from Western European heritage, like it or not. There is still ingrained in our common psyche the model of a flowing dress and long hair as singularly feminine and modest. Catholics use Mary as their model, many protestant folks might think of Puritans, Laura Ingalls Wilder, or another stereotype.

Well, you might say, you’re just living up to a stereotype. Yes and No. Yes, because I would like to emulate holy, chaste, and humble women of the past. No, because I think I can turn the stereotypes to my favor. People can use their caricatures to identify me as a religious nut, as they often do, but when they get to know me, the wires get all crossed in their minds. “She’s not acting like a zealot….she’s funny, she gets angry sometimes, she’s not leaving tracts on my desk, she answers my questions without preaching…”

Religious stereotypes only help people remember there may be a fundamental difference in our outlooks. Think of Amish Christians. Think of hijab-wearing Muslim women. Wearing dresses in a non-dresses predominant but still within cultural memory climate is a way of being openly religious in a non-threatening way. People will accept you as you as a Christian, not as necessarily “one of the girls.” You may be surprised at how well strangers will respect you because you respect yourself enough to not give away your body to their gaze.

Guest Blogger!

Tuesday is too far away for this blogging fiend of a woman! :D I have some exciting (to me) news. At the request of MinTheGap, I will become a guest blogger over at Weekend Kindness, a blog devoted to finding ways to express love to our mates, our families, and our neighbors. I get to be the Newlywed spotlight…because, perhaps I know something older marrieds have forgotten. ;) Hopefully, I will post twice a month over there on Marriage issues. Look for an introduction post from me at Weekend Kindness sometime late this week or early next week!

Well, I’m at work and will be taking the afternoon off to study and wash dishes. I will be so relieved after approximately 7:30 pm when the final exam is over! Blessings to All.

Weekend Blogging Break

Final exam time is fast approaching on Monday evening for my Economics class! This weekend I will be studying and reviewing the last month’s worth of materials in preparation. Mt. Washmore is threatening to swallow me whole every time I walk past the overflowing laundry hamper. My husband and I have not had more than a couple of hours of awake time together each day since….I can’t remember! I will return to Veiled Glory blogging on Tuesday. :)

In the meantime, please read the following article Cara Michele has so graciously brought to my attention. My next posting will be in response to it and try to answer her questions regarding pants and Biblical interpretation. Have a great weekend!

My Answers to the Shoes Meme

Here goes:

Are sandals (of all sorts, flip-flops, too) modest? If not, why? - Generally, I would say yes, unless they are designed to be very “strappy” or sexy on purpose. Do men really oogle toe cleavage? I haven’t figured this out. I love my sandals in the summer!

If you show your toes…do you feel the need to paint them? Why? - No toe painting. Long ago and far away, I had them shellacked year-round…now it has been about two years since I seriously kept them painted. Jeff prefers me without.

Heels…Do you risk your health and safety for fashion? - Well, after seeing what a lifetime of high-heels did to my grandmother’s feet, I resolved to put comfort ahead of fashion. I own three pairs of sensible heels that come out for work or very special occasions.

How many pairs of shoes do you currently own? - 18 pairs, including flip-flops and boots.

How many pairs of shoes could you possibly reduce down to? - My dream is to have less than 10. It could happen…I also dream of the Perfect Pair of Brown Shoes to go with my cape dresses. They are comfortable, neat, and last a long time. Where are you, PPBS??

Does your husband complain about said number of shoes? - Yes…because my shoes inhabit his closet. :D

New to Me: Links on Wednesday

Here are a few links to read and ponder:

This article uses an awesome quote from an “Asian believer”. Note: There is a piece of artwork on this article which is weirdly out of place…you are forewarned.

The Maidens of Modesty for your younger ladies.

Review of Newsweek articles on the Girls Gone Mild book…also great comment discussion at the end.

One woman’s realization of Modesty issues.

An excellent article from an Orthodox perspective.

Its Wednesday and do you know where your shoes are?

….at least one pair are on my feet! :D Sorry, folks, I forgot to count my shoes. I own more pairs than I can remember in my head. Egad…I’ll complete the shoe Meme tomorrow.

We had date night last night instead of Thursday. Jeff will be coaching his last ever softball game with Teen Challenge that evening. I’ll tag along to cheer. :) We had a great evening watching Lord of the Rings (first movie, half way through.) Jeff is a much more into LOTR than I am, but I enjoy it enough to watch it with him.

Actually, we have our own trilogy in the works! No elves or dwarves, all humanoid characters are in the story but lots of good plot drama, religious tension, racial issues, morality, and Good Converting (not vanquishing!) Evil. Yeah, its really, really fun creating a fictional world at times! [And I get to do it with my best friend...]

Shoes, a Meme

Yesterday’s experience in pharmaceuticals left me mentally zoinked in terms of thinking up a modesty or head covering related blog post. Sigh…then I looked at my feet. Shoes! We can talk about shoes! Women love shoes!

Shoes matter in modesty. There is the trite phrase of men having been excited to see a well-turned ankle back in the day. Now they get more than an eye-full! A dainty slipper has become today’s spiked heel, open toe, laced up…err…shoe. I’m sure some of the contraptions I see hobbling around campus were once lawn aerators! My theory is that when the foot/ankle/calve became no longer exciting to see, fashionistas had to work extra hard to make people notice their gams.

A cute side story: When Jeff and I were still engaged, I was lounging on his couch, watching TV while he was in the kitchen. I had a blanket wrapped up over my legs. As I sat up and took off the blanket, my skirt flipped up to reveal my knees. I was wearing knee-high socks and bike shorts underneath my denim skirt so only my knee caps were really peaking through. Jeff had just turned around and he exclaimed, “KNEES!” I, of course, quickly flipped my skirt down. He had never seen my knees! I made sure he didn’t see them again until after our marriage. ;)

Here are some questions for you:

  • Are sandals (of all sorts, flip-flops, too) modest? If not, why?
  • If you show your toes…do you feel the need to paint them? Why?
  • Heels…Do you risk your health and safety for fashion?
  • How many pairs of shoes do you currently own?
  • How many pairs of shoes could you possibly reduce down to?
  • Does your husband complain about said number of shoes?

For your curiosity, I’ll answer those questions in my next post. You could even use these questions as a Meme! Wow…I started a meme! If you read the above questions and maintain a blog…consider yourself tagged! Ping me if you answer.

My First (and only) Day on Ritalin

Thank you all for your prayers today…it was a rough day of weird symptoms and asking myself over and over, “What was I thinking?”

Yes, I took one 10 mg tablet of Ritalin, prescribed by my doctor, this morning. That is the lowest dosage available. She said to give it a try for two weeks and see her in a month. Well, the remainder of the pills have been ceremonially dumped into the toilet and flushed!

For the shortened long story: A sibling and my father have recently started in on Ritalin as adults. They’ve been having good results. My husband and I have been joking for months that I’ve got ADD. I thought I’d give it a try for a little while to see if it would improve my clarity of thought.

Jeff was really against it because Ritalin is essentially Meth in a small dose. He works with drug addicts and knows what this stuff does to people. He has seen me all loopy on over-the-counter medicines…what could this possibly do?

[Disclaimer: Ritalin works for some people. I am not entirely against it...only for me!]

My hands started to feel puffy (they did not swell…but felt that way all day). I felt sleepy and alert at the same time, like I took a sleeping pill with a double shot of espresso. My face felt numb and my speech was difficult and slow. Yeah…this was the medication to help me be not so distracted.

Jeff administered his version of detox: chocolate ice cream and oreo cookies. :)

I can at least rule out ADD…which leads to my next tangent….

For a few weeks now, I’ve been investigating autism, more specifically, Asperger’s Syndrome. That was really difficult for me to write just then…because it feels like I’m baring my soul in admitting I might have a profound neurological difference. Though I’ve not been officially diagnosed, the patterns of my childhood and adulthood seem to be lining up within the confines of the autism spectrum. Jeff agrees with many of the articles we’ve read.

Where do I go from here? I’m not sure…but the more I learn, the better I understand how God made me and may want to use me in the world.

Prayer Request

Hello all~

I tried a new medication this morning, one that is not necessary but supposed to be helpful to my overall well-being. Ummm…let’s say the side affects are negating any help I might have received. Pray that it will get through my system quickly! The medicine is supposed to last about 12 hours….ack! I’m drinking lots of water and husband is on call. Love ~Anna

[Update: Its about noon and the side affects are lessening. Thanks for the prayers! I'll go into more detail later about this mystery substance soon.]
