A pastor called me Laura Ingalls! I felt somewhat complimented. I used the Country Cape Dress pattern from Candle on the Hill and the covering I designed myself.

Thanks, Alice! The dress is made out of a lightweight cotton fabric in a small woven pink and white check. It drapes nicely, too. I need breathable fabric here in the steamy summer months ahead! 😉

I really like your dress! I love Candle on a Hill Patterns, I’m saving up for their country dress pattern. I’d like to make one for my class reunion. I agree with you about the lightweight cotton dresses, here in Central Texas, it gets pretty unbearable!

The dress is lovely Anna! I’m with Ginger, I’m afraid. I need someone else to make it for me. I can’t sew a stitch! Now crochet? That’s entirely different. I can crochet just about anything. But that doesn’t make for a modest dress. 😦
Anyhow, you are lovely in your dress & covering. I wear skirts and dresses most of the time but they’re not cape dresses. I would love to own one someday but my skirts are so long and flowing that I have much modest cover; blouses too. I think I should have been born on a prairie somewhere. LOL

Modesty has always been associated with Godliness. Show me one picture of the Virgin Mary without her hair covered and a long modest dress! It clearly states in Corinthians that Christain women are supposed to cover their hair, just as it prescribed for Jewish and Muslim women. It’s truly liberating to cover up the body from the eyes of others in order to draw the heart closer to God. If you are looking for modest clothes then try Muslim websites. Hi my name is Christina and I have been working with a missions organization as a Bible teacher since 2002 and I came across your website sort of by accident but having read some of the comments I wanted to post one myself – especially in response to Rebecca’s comment. First of all I think it is commendable that you all desire to be modest and godly – I believe that is important, but you cannot please God by any action you might take whether it is dressing modestly or anything else. The only way we please God is through faith in Jesus and the sacrifice he has made on our behalf, and our assurance of an eternity in heaven is also by faith not by works of any kind. See Galatians and Romans 3:21-26. This is not to say that godly living isn’t important but it isn’t how we are made right before God rahter we live right out of gratitude to Him for saving us and it is possible because we have the power of the Holy Spirit within us. Also I believe that holding up a dress-code from the 1800’s or whatever era cape dresses are from is somewhat misguided and missing the point perhaps. Yes, modesty is important, but what makes you sure this is what the Bible meant by modest dress? Also this seems to put the blame on women for the problem of lust rather than on the one who is lusting. Jesus clearly holds the one who lusts as responsible Matt. 5:28. Also we know from scripture that God is much more concerned with the heart than outward appearance – you can be dressed in a cape dress and be more impure in heart than a woman wearing modern clothes. The issue isn’t primarily how you dress but are you lusting or desiring others to lust after you. Also in response to Arshia’s comment about 1st Corinthians – perhaps it is dealing with modesty – I think it is, however I think it was the secondary issue that Paul was dealing with. In regards to the modesty issue remember he was addressing being modest in their culture not ours. Yes we need to apply scripture in the here and now, but we may miss the point completely if we try and directly apply everything without understanding context and the historical background. For example none of us would agree that we shoudln’t tell people who Jesus is, but if we wanted to directly apply Luke 9:20-21 without considering the context & historical background we may do that, ignoring other commands to go out into all the world and preach the good news. Anyways I think the primary thing that Paul is addressing in 1st Corinthians is that women were trying to dress like men in order to be more spiritual – it was a common pagan religious practice at that time for men to dress like women and vice versa in the worship of some gods as a sign of religious devotion. Paul is very clearly telling women that they can only pray and prophesy if they are dressed as women – in that culture men and women both wore similar clothes to one another the distinctive part of a woman’s dress was her head covering. Women don’t need to become like men in order to “be more spiritual” they already are as spiritual as they need to be and have authority to speak as long as they don’t try and become like men and vice versa.

I have to second that, Joy. Coming from a strict Mennonite background, I grew up being surrounded by knowledge of rules and limitations that I thought were from God but were really man-made. After leaving this environment I was able to grow into a deeper and more understanding relationship with God and was taught to read the Bible in context. It is a joy to love and serve God without constant fear of ‘messing up.’ He is concerned with my heart state, and with what it produces in my life. But it is His Holy Spirit and His word which guide me and convict me, not a man imposed standard of dress. God bless you all in your efforts to please Him.

What you write has been answered on the conservative websites if you have a mind to enquire, because what you write is the arguement of modernday false teachers who wish to befriend the world and not be persecuted for their so called faith in Jesus. Know that what you write is the lukewarm position of those who praise Jesus with their lips while their hearts are far from Him. The cape dress is the closest thing to ‘kosmios katastola’ the dress code required for Christian women, along with a head covering, no makeup or jewelery. Anything other than this is simply not Christian and anyone who tells you different is a false teacher, a wolf in sheep clothing.
Paul writes that a Christian woman who will not cover her head should have her head shorn in the manner of an adulterous woman, and we know that adulterers do not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. We cannot serve both God and mammon and a woman who is not covering her head is clearly serving mammon with her heart irrespective of the false praise for God from her adulteress lips.
People prefer to dress in a worldly manner that brings praise from humans and not in a Christian manner that brings praise from God and scorn from people, especially mocking from the lukewarm Christians.
May God help you Joy to see the error of your ways before the return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
